An EKU student received the Outstanding Undergraduate Presentation award at the recent meeting of the American Correctional Association (ACA) in Philadelphia.

Nathan Fisher, a senior corrections and juvenile services major from Bardstown, won for his presentation, "Racial Profiling and Discrimination in Police Traffic Stops," which was based on a study of stops along Interstate 95 from Maryland from Florida. About 100 papers were presented by undergraduates nationwide.

Dr. Bruce Wolford, professor of corrections and juvenile justice, said judges likely were impressed that Fisher's research extended well beyond usual library sources.

"I chose this subject because it was a hot topic," said Fisher, who developed the work in his Senior Seminar class last summer. "I wanted to gain more knowledge."

With eight students attending the national conference, EKU had a greater representation than any other participating institution.

Fisher, a 1997 graduate of Bardstown High School, is the son of Joyce Fisher and grandson of Hettie Fisher, both of Bardstown. After graduation in December, he plans to attend graduate school or continue in his job as a community youth counselor with the Presbyterian Child Welfare Agency in Richmond.

The ACA is the largest professional association for corrections professionals in the United States.
