Eastern Kentucky
University has named Cheryl K. Harris as University Counsel, it was
announced today by President Joanne Glasser.
Harris, who practices with the law firm of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs,
LLP, is a "well-respected attorney who brings a wealth of diverse
legal experience to this very important position," according to
Glasser. "We are indeed fortunate to have her join our senior leadership
team."
She assumes her new position July 14.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to serve EKU as University
Counsel," Harris said. "EKU occupies a significant role with
its important contributions to the state and to the lives of its students.
President Glasser's enthusiasm for the continued success of the University
and its students as well as her commitment to make EKU a comprehensive
regional university of national distinction are inspiring. I look forward
to joining in her commitment to the EKU community."
With Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs since 1998, Harris has served as a member
of the firm's Labor and Employment Group, Diversity Services Group,
International Trade Practice Group, Client Relations Committee and Recruiting
Committee. Her practice areas have included labor and employment, commercial
litigation and business immigration, among others. She has served higher
education institutions, non-profit organizations and manufacturing and
service corporations on a wide range of legal matters.
In addition, Harris has contributed numerous legal articles for the
Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and American Bar Association and has been
a frequent lecturer on employment law issues and immigration topics.
Since 1998, she has been the 6th Circuit editor for the ABA Labor and
Employment Law Newsletter.
From 1993 to 1998, she was in-house counsel with The Valvoline Company,
advising the company on employment disputes, product liability and premises
liability claims, retail promotional programs, advertising, and real
estate issues.
Harris earned a bachelor's degree in communications from the University
of Kentucky, graduating with high distinction. She then graduated from
the University of Kentucky College of Law.
She is a member of the Fayette County Bar Association, Kentucky Bar
Association and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
Harris also is active in community affairs. She was a member of the
Board of Directors of the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra from 1998
to 2000. She also has provided pro bono legal services to community-based
non-profit organizations.
