A formal junior faculty mentoring program in the College of Arts & Sciences pairs tenured professors with new hires to enhance faculty recruitment and retention as well as productivity and effectiveness.

A research project by Laura Newhart, associate professor of philosophy and religion, will be showcased at the Earth Expeditions World Community Conference at the Cincinnati Zoo in January.

The University’s Office of First Year Programs has received two national awards from the National Orientation Directors Association – Outstanding Orientation Handbook and Outstanding Welcome Week Publicity.

Derek Kirk, an actor in "The Library," was one of six student interns who worked on the award-winning film written and produced by two EKU faculty members.
A film written and produced by two Eastern faculty members and involving six student interns recently earned the Best Short Film Award at the 2008 Cinefest Movie Expo and Festival in Louisville.

“The Library,” the brainchild of John Fitch and Chad Cogdill, was produced at EKU in the summer of 2008 with the six-student crew.

Eastern’s Workforce Education Office will offer professional development educational opportunities with more than 50 certificate and “open enrollment” courses during the spring semester.


Health Services Administration seniors enrolled in the Health Services Management course produced a multi-phase project for a hypothetical physician's office converting to an electronic health record environment, expanding its physical space and launching a marketing campaign. QEP Stars, a new regular feature in EKUpdate, will take a look at those faculty members who are incorporating critical/creative thinking and communication strategies with their students. The feature hopes to show how those strategies have impacted the classroom experience, both from a learning and teaching standpoint. This issue's "QEP Star" is Lana Carnes, professor and chair of Management, Marketing and Administrative Communication.

Eight Eastern students will study abroad during winter break through the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad.


Jack Herlihy, associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies and director of the Center for Educational Research in Appalachia (CERA), is featured in this ongoing series designed to allow EKU leaders and others in prominent positions to discuss their roles as well as campus issues. Herlihy, who joined the EKU faculty in 1981, holds a doctorate from Indiana University in Bloomington, and Rank I Professional Diploma, Principals Certification (Superintendent) and master's and bachelor's degrees from Morehead State University.

Dr. Cynthia Harter, Center for Economics, was awarded $24,150 from the National Council on Economic Education for a research project comparing a graduate class in consumer economics and personal finance to an in-service workshop to examine the relative effectiveness of different types of teacher training on student learning.

Dr. William Ed Davis, College of Business and Technology, was awarded $54,340 in supplemental funds for the Tech Prep program.
